To support the initial phases of compost manufacturing, the GC Fabric Building Division constructed a 155’ x 224’ fabric enclosure dedicated to material pre‑processing. Within this covered structure, incoming food waste and green waste are blended and prepared for composting. Larger materials are reduced in size using a grinding machine, resulting in a more uniform mix that supports efficient downstream processing. The enclosed workspace improves material handling while allowing operations to continue smoothly regardless of weather conditions.
Dem-Con partnered with Greystone to design-build its award-winning materials recovery facility using metal building construction. Commingled recycled materials are accepted at the site, then sorted and processed by a state-of-the-art system capable of processing 20 tons per hour.
This compost facility has proven economical, efficient, and sustainable from an operational perspective, while creating long-term environmental benefits by diverting material that traditionally would have been landfilled, thereby reducing methane emissions.
Mark Gutberlet, P.E., BCEE, Vice President, EA EngineeringThe City of Albany’s commercial composting facility uses durable, weather‑protected structures to support high‑volume organic waste handling, with organized compost bays, efficient equipment access, natural ventilation, and clear spans designed for large machinery and long‑term material management.
Dem-Con Companies partnered with Greystone to construct a metal recycling facility utilizing a precast concrete building designed for durability and high-volume processing. The facility supports the processing of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, automobiles, and excess materials, with a layout optimized for efficient material flow and reliable operations.
