Significant expansion project successfully delivered

Conserv FS identified its service center in Waterman, Illinois for a significant expansion to better serve agricultural customers in DeKalb County and beyond. Conserv FS partnered with Greystone to replace a 55-year-old 1,400-ton dry fertilizer facility, build a crop protection mixing facility and warehouse, and add a new liquid fertilizer facility.

Quick Facts

  • Dry Fert. Storage: 7,500 Tons
  • Number of Bins: 10 + 4 Micronutrients
  • Receiving Capacity: 200 TPH
  • Load Out Capacity: 360 TPH
  • Liquid Fert Storage: 1.3 Million Gallons

The project was a seamless effort thanks to our general contractor, Greystone Construction. They supplied an on-site, full-time superintendent along with a dedicated project manager and a staff at their headquarters available to us 24/7 to address every facet of our project needs from financial reporting, to site safety, and more. Greystone’s construction expertise and network of suppliers proved to be invaluable and provided a wealth of knowledge that I believe was worth more than we paid for. Their versatile team members were always on point with answers to my questions and provided timely solutions which took our project from concept to completion on-time and under budget. We had an amazing experience and are working with Greystone on another facility expansion project.

What they needed

Conserv FS identified its service center in Waterman, Illinois for a significant expansion to better serve agricultural customers in DeKalb County and beyond. They needed to replace a 55-year-old 1,400-ton dry fertilizer facility, build a crop protection mixing facility and warehouse, and add a new liquid fertilizer facility.

“We’ve been serving agriculture for nearly 100 years and this project is an example of our commitment to serve the future of agriculture in our territory,” said Dave Swigart, General Manager of Conserv FS.

What we designed

This expansion includes a new 7,500-ton dry fertilizer building equipped with a 24-ton blender and a NTEP certified AUTOBATCH blending system and has the capacity to load 8 semi-trucks per hour. Also included is 1.3 million gallons of liquid fertilizer storage integrated with a crop protection mixing facility and warehouse. This new liquid facility is equipped with three load bays providing both top and bottom load options with “hot-load” capabilities. A 24/7 unattended bay is available after-hours for nitrogen solution loads with nitrogen stabilizers. Each of these bays can easily fill 6 semi-loads per hour (18 semi-loads total/hour for the liquid facility). In addition to these, the expansion features 72,000 gallons of bulk crop protection product storage contained in this facility and ample mini-bulk and package good storage that provides tremendous flexibility and capacity. Both the dry fertilizer and the liquid facility contain automated systems integrated with ordering, operations, and accounting software providing greatly streamlined processes and improved flow of information to the customer.

“The collaboration between Greystone Construction and Conserv FS through every step of the project resulted in an outstanding finished product,” said Dave Swigart, General Manager of Conserv FS.
